Compatibility with Existing Cinema 4D Modules

X-Particles is compatible with the existing particle modifiers. It can be used with object deformers and Mograph effectors, and works with the dynamics system in R13 or later. If you don’t have a version of Cinema with dynamics, it contains its own basic collision system for handling collisions with scene objects. Splines generated by the Trail object can be rendered with the Hair renderer. X-Particles can also emit Thinking Particles and particles can then be rendered with Pyrocluster or with the C4D Hair renderer.

Particle Possibility

One of the best aspects of X-Particles is how fun it is to play with. Experimenting can be the best way to learn and make great looking effects, and X-Particles makes experimentation fun and easy. Every time you have an idea for what you want your system to do, it's probably possible and easy to learn. Take a look at some of the renders we have made with only weeks exposure to X-Particles. When I look at what we made in only a few weeks, the potential and possibility of X-Particles in my workflow makes me so excited.

New for X-Particles 3.5

As of X-Particles 3 the licensing is done online so you need an internet connection, and must have a connection at least every 21 days (you can only be offline for 21 days). With X-Particles 3.5 this has been extended to 30 days offline and by request can be temporarily extended to longer periods.

We are really pleased to announce our latest release X-Particles 3.5 is now live. This is a completely FREE update to existing X-Particles 3 customers, even better you don’t have to do a thing – the update will happen automatically.

X-Particles Pro

This is the Pro version of X-Particles. It contains features that power users or those who want to produce very high-end effects would require.

Components

X-Particles is a completely new particle system which does not need the standard Cinema 4D emitter or Thinking Particles. It has a number of components:

  • six generator objects – Emitter, Object Generator, Sprite Generator, Trail Generator, Skinner object and Fragmenter object
  • very fast particle rendering even with 10s of millions of particles
  • 39 new Xpresso nodes
  • greatly enhanced Python support
  • new particle Painting tool
  • three control objects – System, Question, and Action
  • twenty-seven (count ‘em!) particle modifiers including versions of all the inbuilt modifiers in Cinema and some new ones not provided with C4D as standard

Control system

X-Particles contains a system of close control over almost all parameters using Questions and Actions. No Xpresso is required and everything is done through Cinema’s Object and Attribute Managers in the same way as for other objects. The system works by asking a ’Question’ of each particle – for example, does the particle age exceed a specified value. If the particle ‘passes’ the Question, an Action is called which has an effect on the particle. Most Actions work through the particle modifiers but others are independent of them.
Questions and Actions are not dependent on keyframes, so although you can keyframe most aspects of the X-Particles system, you don’t have to do so if you don’t want to.

 

Python

Python Support

Version 2.5 has greatly-enhanced Python support which really exposes the innards of X-Particles. Now you can control the particles the way you want to - even write your own Xpresso nodes if you need to mimic those provided with Thinking Particles.

  • maximum particle count of 1 billion particles (C4D itself has a smaller limit on the total number of objects which can be generated)
  • multithreaded emitter
  • fluid simulation and multiphysics constraints
  • fast particle generation, significantly faster compared to the previous version (1.2)
  • memory footprint kept as low as possible
  • competely revised and much improved collision engine
  • three standard emitter shapes, or use any primitive, polygon object, or spline as a source of particles
  • in object mode, initial particle direction and emission source (e.g. object vertices or polygons or a texture) can be selected
  • also in object mode, particles can be emitted from objects which are themselves being generated by another X-Particles object (e.g. put a Trail object in a Sweep NURBS and use the Sweep as a source object for more particles)
  • in object mode particles can be emitted from a voxel grid
  • emitted particles can be stuck to the source object and move with it emitters can be used to spawn particles from other particles using a Spawn modifier user-selectable editor colour and shape for particles many other parameters including speed, birthrate, emission frames, lifespan, etc. built in HUD display for particle counts MAXON’S “Thinking Particles” can be emitted for compatibility with Pyrocluster and the Hair renderer
  • emitted particles can be edited (e.g. moved, deleted) using Cinema' s standard tools
  • emitters can be used to spawn particles from other particles using a Spawn modifier
  • user-selectable editor colour and shape for particles
  • many other parameters including speed, birthrate, emission frames, lifespan, etc.
  • built in HUD display for particle counts
  • MAXON’S “Thinking Particles” can be emitted for compatibility with Pyrocluster and the Hair renderer

 

Particle Painting tool

  • paint particles directly onto polygon object
  • once painted, the tool can be used to delete them or edit attributes such as colour, radius or speed

 

Skinner features

  • powerful mesher object
  • can use several particle sources - X-Particles, standard CINEMA 4D emitter, Thinking Particles
  • can also use scene objects (completely replaces the CINEMA 4D metaball)
  • works in conjunction with the fluid system

 

Fragmenter features

  • two modes - Faces or Objects
  • in Faces mode, generate the faces of an object as individual polygons
  • in Objects mode, generate particles for existing scene objects and control those objects with the particle engine

 

Object generator features

  • generate multiple child objects sequentially or randomly
  • change the generated objects with the control system
  • can be used to morph from one object to another (using the supplied Morph modifier)
  • set initial scale and rotation of objects (with random variation if required)
  • scale and spin objects during playback using the appropriate modifiers

Sprite generator features

  • in this context, X-Particles sprites are very simple geometry or omni lights for fast generation and rendering
  • several C4D primitives are used plus two new ones, the Cross and 3-Plane objects
  • can generate a point cloud where each particle is one point
  • can also generate lights and text
  • ‘face camera’ and 'face object' settings included – no need to use a tag
  • set initial scale and rotation of sprites (with random variation if required)
  • scale and spin sprites during playback using the appropriate modifiers
  • set sprite textures and change them using the control system
  • using the supplied sprite shader, sprites can be coloured randomly, or colour and other effects such as transparency can be made dependent on particle age and other parameters

 

Trail generator features

  • similar to the Mograph Tracer object
  • produces splines which are fully compatible with Hair, Sketch and Toon, etc.
  • configurable trail length
  • connect mode with several different algorithms
  • freeze particles on completion

 

Particle modifiers

  • twenty-four modifiers provided
  • includes new particle Morph modifier
  • modifiers are multithreaded
  • some are new versions, usually with additional features, of the standard C4D modifiers, such as Gravity, Turbulence, Deflector
  • others are completely different – Cover/Target, Flocking, Scale, Spin, Spawn
  • all modifiers can be controlled by Actions, allowing you to turn an effect on and off or alter the parameters of the modifier during playback
  • existing C4D modifiers can also be used with X-Particles

 

Tags

  • seven tags, including the new Wet Map tag

Shaders

  • a particle shader is included which can be used to render particles without geometry or Cinema 4D Hair
  • includes age-related effects such as colour dependent on age
  • a channel shader is included for use with the Sprite generator, this allows any channel which has a link for a shader to have effects which are dependent on age or other particle parameters
  • a special shader for the Skinner object is also included
  • new Wet Map Shader

 

Xpresso nodes

  • all modifiers have a corresponding Xpresso node
  • standalone emitter, group, and question nodes included
  • particle iterator and trail point iterator nodes
  • seven get/set data nodes

What you CAN'T do in X-Particles

For the sake of transparency, here are what we see as the current limitations of X-Particles.

  • X-Particles is a very fast, full-featured particle system. But it is not a specialist system for ultra-realistic fluids such as Realflow. The fluid sim has been much improved in XP 2.5, but at heart it is still an SPH fluid system. If you are looking for a full-featured simulation of CG fluids, you might also want to look at Realflow or DPIT Effex.
  • This is not (yet) a system developed for fire or gas simulations. In version 2.5 there is no specialist solver or shaders for that purpose. If you want such a thing you could look at Turbulence 4D or DPIT Effex. TFD is compatible with X-Particles.
  • X-Particle sprites are geometry-based, not a non-geometry placard system. This doesn't make it any less effective... but just so you know what the sprites are.
